Kay Faraday had a relatively normal life. Well, as normal as a girl from the Ace Attorney series can be. She grew up with her father, who divorced her mother when she was very young. He was a prosecutor, and often brought her along to work with him. He was her idol, and she often viewed him as a hero of justice, always catching the criminals. She was a bit of a loner as a child, so her father would often play with her, and gave her a notebook to keep all their promises to each other in. He was a bit...overprotective, but when you're a single father and your wife divorced you, then it can only be expected. Nonetheless, Kay had a rather loving childhood, thanks to her father. Then, one day her entire life changed. Her father was busy with a court case, and she awaited him in the Defense Lobby.
The case was deciding the fate of Mack Rell, who was being tried for the murder of Deid Mann (original, I know). If he was caught, he was told to proclaim himself as the Yatagarasu, a notorious modern-day 'Robin Hood', who stole 'The Truth'. The trial ended with Mack Rell accusing Byrne Faraday, Kay's father, as the Yatagarasu, as the defense attorney had told him to, if he wanted an aquittal. The trial entered recess, to be postponed for twenty minutes. It wasn't long before people had entered the secondary lobby, they found Byrne Faraday stabbed in the chest, dead, and Mack Rell with a gunshot wound in a matching spot.
Enter Miles Edgeworth, an up and coming prosecutor there to observe the trial. Both he and his adoptive sister Franziska were thrust into the case by a strange turn of events, making 'friends' with the young Kay Faraday as she sat around waiting for her father. It wasn't until later she'd realize that her father wasn't coming back, but Edgeworth wanted to make sure that the truth was found, as this was his first real 'case' as a fresh-off-the-press prosecutor, and he wanted to make his mentor proud. After a bit of investigation, Edgeworth and Franziska revealed that it was not Mack Rell who had stabbed him, but the defense attorney of the trial, Calisto Yew.
But even in this close knit organization, people have secrets that they'll kill for. The Yatagarasu was on the trail of a smuggling ring, and Calisto was an agent planted inside the 'enemy' to make sure that the smuggling ring was never put to a stop. This included receiving orders to kill Byrne Faraday, who was thought to be a threat since he knew too much. Edgeworth brought this out of her (between her notorious laughing fits), and exposed her for what she truly was. Before anyone could get a hold of her, however, she fired a gun and escaped during the chaos. With Calisto gone and no definitive evidence to track her down, the case remained dead. But that still left Kay without both a dad and a home. It was enough to make any little girl cry, and right into Edgeworth's cravat. He ended up giving it to her, and she made a promise that she'd give it back someday.
Cut to seven years in the future, Edgeworth gets a phone call from an old family friend about how their son is being held for ransom. Instead of bringing it to the authorities, the man wants Edgeworth to deliver the money just so his son can be brought home safe. However, during the transfer, Edgeworth is ambused, knocked on the back of the head. It ends with him being tied to a pillar in a room, only to be saved by...Kay herself! She is now 17, grown up and claiming to be the Great Thief Yatagarasu. But there's no way this girl could possibly be the great thief of legend that Edgeworth had heard of back in the day, right? She'd watched him get dragged into the room, and thus, entered to save him. Edgeworth didn't really recognize her at first, but for the moment, the biggest issue was finding a way out. After some investigation, they were able to climb their way out by a ladder, only to meet Agent Shi-Long Lang, and his assistant Shih-na.
And not only did they have a hostage situation to deal with, but a murder too. It turns out that Edgeworth's old friend's butler had gone missing, and was found dead inside the garage of the place Edgeworth was being held prisoner. Crazy coincidence? Or connected in some way? Edgeworth and Kay investigated, only to find the son 'escaping' his captors. Having some issue with this, and dealing with the 'cooperation' of Agent Lang, Edgeworth questioned Lance, the son, as well as his girlfriend, Ms. Pawps, to figure out that it wasn't a hostage situation at all. It was all a set up. Turns out that the son faked his own hostage situation in order to get money from his father, and in turn accidentally killed his butler, who was also in on the deal. Thanks to Kay's device, Little Thief, she was able to recreate the murder scene and discover that it was actually Lance Amano, the son who was taken hostage, as the killer.
It was only a few days later, when Edgeworth and Kay were attending a Steel Samurai show at the embassies for Babahl and Allebahst. During an open-air stage ceremony, Edgeworth lost Kay, who was chasing someone who claimed to be the real Yatagarasu. The building she ran into caught on fire, and when Edgeworth went to find her, he had to wait until the fire was put out. Upon investigation, it turns out that Shih-na, Lang's assistant, was holding her under the arrest for the murder of a man found in the burning building. Edgeworth knew she couldn't have done it, and thus proved her innocence through some investigation of his own.
With Kay off the hook, they continued their search, only to find that there was a smuggling ring fiasco going on. It is also to note that Shih-na was in fact Calisto Yew, the same lady who had brought upon her father's death. It turns out that Byrne Faraday wasn't the only part of the Yatagarasu, and that Calisto and a detective named Tyrell Badd were all part of it. Calisto had drastically changed her appearance and name to keep her identity hidden, and revealed that all along she had been working for a smuggling company. Byrne Faraday was hot on the trail of said company, and had to be disposed of. It was then that Shih-na/Calisto turned a gun on Kay, only to be stopped by Shi-Long, who reprimanded her.
Then all that remained was the smuggling ring itself. It turned out that Quercus Alba, the Ambassador for Allebahst, was one of the heads of the counterfeiting and smuggling. But because of the Embassy not being on United States grounds, he was unable to be arrested. It took some help from Shi-Long Lang, Edgeworth, Kay, and Tyrell Badd, Byrne Faraday's old friend to put Quercus Alba down for good, and arrested. Byrne Faraday's murder was avenged, and the Yatagarasu name was clean once more. She vowed to start a new Yatagarasu, and quickly took a picture with Edgeworth before making her exit into the world.
6. Personality: The first thing you'll notice about Kay Faraday is that she's upbeat and energetic. Really, this girl packs a lot of energy it's unrealistic. Nothing ever seems to wear her out or stop her from doing something when she's determined. And the best part (or worst, if you're not one for that kind of thing) is that she'll do this all with a smile on her face. Some people will be turned off by this part of her personality, mainly because she's perky, and a touch too perky at that.
You may also notice another part of Kay that is less-than-desirable to some more than others: her lack of fear. This girl is undoubtedly brave. If something is in front of her that's out of this world, she will either take a picture of it, ask a ton of questions to it (especially if it's sentient), or spy on it. Which method she chooses depends on the supernatural being. A part of it comes from her huge interest in cartoons/TV shows. Her favourite shows are the Jammin' Ninja and to a much lesser extent, the Steel Samurai. She sees these otherworldly creatures as being in a TV show, and whether or not that's her bravery kicking in or her complete lack of a sense of reality has yet to be determined. We want to assume it's the former, though.
After all, she seems to treat the people in Blue Badger costumes as the character, saying that she 'hates' the Blue Badger and even gets angry when she sees him. She tends to take shows very seriously, going so far as to participate in the Jammin Ninja vs. Steel Samurai debate, which is a lot like the Ace Attorney version of Marvel vs. DC.
While Kay exhibits a lot of traits that make her seem unbelievably bubbly, it is possible to get her to be sad. She lost her father at a very young age, and he was her only idle. Byrne was a single father, so Kay grew up with him, idolizing every part of him. To her, he was the best man in the universe, and nothing would convince her otherwise. So obviously, his death or a death in the family to someone is a sensitive subject for her. When Kay does get sad, she will often try to mask it, or at least hide it from others. She'll blink, look upwards, or even just go hide. After all, one of the promises Byrne wrote down for her was to not cry in front of strangers, so you can bet that she would try to keep that promise at any and all costs. She loves her father, and he probably didn't want her showing such weaknesses.
Anger is a rare emotion coming from this girl, but it does exist. If you do manage to get on her bad side, she'll handle the situation very maturely, especially considering how immature she might seem. There are some lines you just don't cross with this one, and if you do, you might be surprised at the amount of competence she can have if she puts forth the effort. This, accompanied with her fearlessness can be a devastating emotional combo. She won't be afraid to speak up to people if they're talking nonsense, offensively, or the like. Mainly, she'll make her presence known. When it comes to holding grudges, she's about average. She'll hold it until it's resolved, and uses the forgive/forget when it's reasonable. However, when it comes to her father's wrongful death, she can't ever forgive who killed him, even if she was brought to justice.
7. Previous Game Developments: N/A
8. Appearance:
Kay is your typical, asian teenage girl, standing at about 5'3'' tall. She has green eyes, ebony black hair that's pulled back into a high-held ponytail, and still falling to about her mid back. Around her neck is a blue scarf cut in the shape of a bird's wing, one flap resting on her chest while the other flows in whatever breeze may blowing. She has a red rolled up shirt, with a pink vest overlapping it, and a dark blue miniskirt with shorts underneath. She has red socks and black ninja boots, and a little 'fanny pack' around her waist for keeping things in. There is also a pair of short gloves on her hands, which she constantly pulls at. Finally, there's a tacky little key in her hair. What a weirdo.
9. Abilities:
As far as phyiscal powers and abilities, Kay doesn’t have much. She’s your average teenage girl, through and through. There's no secret hidden superpower when it concerns her. She can do average things, like lift somewhat heavy objects, have semi-decent endurance, and an above-average climbing ability.
She's training herself in parkour, as shown in game how she climbed up a building to get into where Edgeworth was being held captive, andjumping from an insanely large height when Edgeworth himself had to slide down a pole. This shows that she has a very athletically built body, as she doesn't seem to suffer from negative affects from doing such stunts.
If there's one thing about Kay that's considered out of the ordinary, it's her resilience. She tends to take a lot of physical injury very well. In the second game, Kay is actually thrown from a two story roof, only to land and still remain intact. She had injuries with minor amnesia, but her body itself seemed to be okay other than broken arms, thumb, and eye injury. Another moment of her resilience is when she was able to run into a burning building, and even after the firemen had put out the fire, she was inside, completely fine despite how smoke and ash were everywhere.
She's not anything supernatural, but it's above average.
10. Languages: English-Speaking, Reading and Writing
Japanese-Very minimal speaking. No reading or writing. About the amount of Spanish you'd learn from watching Dora the Explorer a few times, except in Japanese terms.
11. Items:
Kay has a little
fanny pack on her waist (it also keeps her shorts up, cause it’s a belt) that’s filled with all sorts of things a great thief needs. This includes: Little Thief, Byrne Faraday's journal, a notebook and a pen, a package of Swiss Rolls, an extra set of gloves, and her phone.
Details are below:
**Little Thief:

Little Thief is a device that looks like a walkie-talkie that Kay can input information judged on what she’s already seen. Once all the data has been put into it, she can create a
holographic ‘scene of the crime’ with it. You can't interact with it, and unless something is put in exactly how it should be, there could be errors. (For example, if you don't put 'a person standing on top of a stage' you'll get a person standing in the middle of a stage, going right through it). It's more or less how Kay practices planning her heists, or lack thereof. More specifically how it works, Kay types in everything on the keypad on the screen, and once she has all the information she needs, she holds it into the air, a green light comes out of the top slit. The green light can envelop everything in a 20ft radius, 30ft height (just guesstimating on this. It takes up considerable space, like entire rooms in the game, but for these purposes I'm going to limit it since Cybertron lacks many rooms). The holograms aren't tangible, so your hand will go right through them if you attempt to touch. It also can only do so much at one time. If you plug too much information into it, there will be conflicts, which is why Kay often uses the same room that a crime was in to do it. That way she doesn't have to place the furniture exactly as it was to clutter up what could be used for evidence and suspects. As for size, it's about as big as a large PDA, and it seems to have a back that slides over it much like a
graphing calculator would.
**Byrne Faraday's Journal:
This is probably one of Kay's more important things that she keeps on her at all times. This journal used to belong to her now-deceased father, Byrne Faraday, and it contains everything that Byrne experienced as the Great Thief Yatagarasu. It spoke of all the secrets he used to get the evidence needed to convict a criminal, details on Little Thief, and his two partners, Detective Badd and Calisto Yew. Kay found this while searching her old house for anything of her dad's, and this was how she found out that she had inherited the title of Great Thief. Now it serves as her code of honor, as the rules and morals the Yatagarasu should have. It's also something that belonged to her father, who she views as her hero.
**Kay's Promise Notebook
This is another thing given to her by her father, except instead of in his death, this was when he was still alive. It's a small notebook that Byrne bought for her to keep all the promises she'd make to him in. Kay will often use this to do the same to other people, writing down promises for them to keep. Next to the journal, this is another one of Kay's most prized possessions, because not only was it a memory of her father, but it was meant FOR her, and only her. The promises so far (written by Byrne) are as follows:
Promise I: Never take things from a stranger
Promise II: Never go anywhere with a stranger
Promise III: Always greet people with a smile, even people you don't know.
Promise IV: Never cry in front of strangers
Promise V: Always try your hardest to learn about things you don't understand.
Promise VI: If you ever have a boyfriend, you must bring him to meet Daddy right away.
Promise VII: Even when you have a boyfriend, never forget that I love you the most.
**Swiss Rolls:
Your average Swiss Roll snack. These are obviously one time use, but she's going to arrive with them. They're chocolate and make a mess. It's also 5 bucks for two of these things. EXPENSIVE...
**Gloves Basically, an extra set of the gloves she's wearing at the moment. One always likes to be prepared!
**Her Phone
Kay's one link to the outside world. Her phone comes with her everywhere, and it can double as a camera, can play music (that's already downloaded on there), and play games that are already downloaded. However, there's probably no internet provider, and not to mention no satellite, so when it comes to using it as a phone, she's a bit out of luck in that department. Also, it runs on battery life, and there's probably no outlets either, so it will die if she doesn't conserve it, or get an alternate method of charging it. Stuff that is on her phone include:
Pictures:
Group Photo 1
At the Zheng Fa Ceremony 1
At the Zheng Fa Ceremony 2
At the Zheng Fa Ceremony 3
Music:
Her theme song (also her ringtone)
Finding the Truth!
Guilty Love by the Gavinners (a famous band)
12. Weapons: The only thing that really qualifies as a weapon that Kay has is the Yatagarasu Key. It's a butterfly knife, and when opened one way, it shows itself to be
a key, and when you flip the handle to the other side, it reveals itself to be
a knife. She's not really knowledgeable on how to use butterfly knives; its more just for the sake of having. She can't even peel fruit with this thing.
13. Writing sample - Third Person
Kay stood at the vending machine, idly shifting the quarters in her hand as she looked at all the choices laid out in front of her. Vending machine choices always seemed so...influential, you know? Do you feel like a 'chips' person today? Or should you sacrifice quantity for indulgence and go for the candy bar? The usual dillemma. But for Kay, it was something else. And not for the same reason everyone usually has.
The Swiss Roll.
Her green eyes seemed fixated on it as she shifted her weight from one leg to the other. Edgeworth had told her to hurry up, and she knew she couldn't just stand here staring at the machine forever...
But there was something special about this vending machine. That choice.
It was in this same courthouse that she got that Swiss Roll with Gumshoe...and when she turned her head to the side, she saw the same bench that they sat down on to eat it. The same window, the same defense lobby just a few paces down...everything. It was all still here.
Seven years can change a lot.
But this place...always seemed to be trapped in time. Everything is exactly the way it should be. How it should have been all those years ago when her father promised to pick her up. When they were going to share that Swiss Roll. Her hand rigidly reached up, letting the quarters roll off into the machine as she thought about all this. And when it came time to punch the number in...
"Kay? What is taking you so long? I told you to make it quick," she could hear Edgeworth behind her say, snapping her back to reality. "The Swiss Roll, right? It's always your favourite." And without another word, he reached over and pressed the button for it, watching it fall down.
She watched, almost dumbstruck by the rapid turn of events as he knelt down, taking the package and handing it to her. Her gaze shifted from the Swiss Roll, to him, then back to the Swiss Roll as she took it, nodding.
"Thanks, Mr. Edgeworth!"
The man simply shrugged. "You paid for it...," he caught himself. "...Right?"
All he recieved as a response was a wink, to which the prosecutor could only groan.
"Things never change with you, Kay."
14. Writing Sample - First Person
Uh...Hiya! Is this thing working? Can anyone hear me? HELLLOOO? Hi!
Okay, I'm going to assume you can. Now what I want to know is...who would strand a poor girl like this without some sort of person around to tell her where she's at? I mean, talk about rude, right? Especially to a Great Thief! I'd like to speak to the manager. If...you have a manager. If not, whoever's in charge! I can deal with that!
Now that the obvious customer complaint is out of the way, let's move on to why I'm speaking into a book. That's really strange! But boy, I sure could have used this back home. It's like a really old smartphone, you know? Like for...monks or something.
And thirdly, I wanna know if any of you guys have seen my friend. His name's Mr. Edgeworth, but he'll pretty much answer to any insult you give him, like 'Mr. Frilly' or 'the guy with the lines on his face'. No seriously, he has them. Don't believe me? Just call his suit pink.
...but I'm getting off topic.
So whattya say? Answers? Help a poor girl out!
15. Tattoo: Right forearm, on the underside.
16. Room Preference: Anywhere's fine, but if you could put her near Kagerou or Shadowmaru, that'd be awesome! Ninjas unite!
